Case Study – Wilton Recycling

Wilton Recycling is a family-run company based in County Cavan, Ireland. It provides a host of recycling and waste management services to customers across the region and country.

Project Brief

Wilton has a large recycling centre located in an exposed landfill area. Due to the open environment, the building is subject to challenging weather conditions, meaning Wilton needed stronger doors that could protect against intense wind pressure.

Furthermore, the doors needed to be suitable for constant use to prevent noise and odour from the waste centre escaping. As the existing doors weren’t suitable for frequent opening and closing, they were left open all the time, allowing the noise and odour to spread.

Our Solution: DUAL-AIR

Prior to the new installation, Wilton had roller shutter security doors that operated at a very slow speed and required someone to control the door manually. This restricted the ability to open and close them regularly, meaning they were left open.

With the doors left open, smells could escape, noise from the machinery could travel, and the building was vulnerable to the elements.

Our solution was the DUAL-AIR folding door, which able to perform a high number of operations without wearing out or damaging essential parts. With the ability to perform up to 1,000,000 opening/closing cycles, the door is built for continual use.

DUAL-AIR folding doors are also able to cover high wind loads (up to class 4). This is largely down to the double (or ‘dual’, as the name suggests) curtain, which provides greater sturdiness, maintaining a solid operation that gives protection against challenging weather conditions.

The dual curtain also creates an air chamber that improves acoustics, reducing noise pollution made by the loud machinery. Further, the thermal insulation maintains minimal thermal difference between the inside and outside temperature.

Lastly, the DUAL-AIR was ideal as it can cover large openings. With a max size of 15000 mm wide and 8000 mm high, the DUAL-AIR was large enough for Wilton’s sizeable facility.

The Result

The installation of the DUAL-AIR folding door provided a robust, practical solution at Wilton’s high-activity recycling centre. In contrast to Wilton’s original manually operated doors, its capacity for regular, intensive use resolved a range of issues outlined in the brief.

With the ability to perform a high number of operations throughout the day, Wilton Recycling has mitigated the spread of both noise pollution and undesirable odour. This benefit also means the opening is no longer kept open all the time, giving greater protection against the elements.

The door’s double curtain design also helped to resolve these issues. With thermal and acoustic benefits, the DUAL-AIR has significantly helped tackle noise and weather challenges while providing an efficient barrier against smells.
